Make yourself happy without breaking the bank

I saw a great bumper sticker today. It said, “the best things in life aren’t things at all”. This really got me thinking. Every weekday, thousands of people are stuck in bumper to bumper traffic trying to get to work or home from work. If you look at the people driving you’ll notice that most of the people aren’t driving by with a big smile on their face. They’re probably wishing they were at home with their families.

We’ve become such a society of wanting things to make us happy. But if you think about it, they only make us happy temporarily. Then we have to pay the bills. Eventually what made us so happy initially just makes us want more. We have to keep working to pay for the things we want and then we need to make more money to keep getting more things. I know, this probably sounds so negative but I don’t mean for it to come across that way. Let me go back to my original point.

Life is so amazing and beautiful, when was that last time you looked around at all the wonderful “things” you have in your life: your family, your friends, your health, your memories. Do you remember what it was like when you started dating someone you really liked. The sky was brighter, the flowers smelled sweeter, food tasted better. The simple things made you happy and a lot of them didn’t cost a thing.

See if you can practice enjoying what’s around. Eat a little slower and savor every morsel. Enjoy a glass of wine with a few of your closest friends and reminisce about things that made you happy (and probably still do). Give someone you care about a hug and tell them how much you appreciate them. And my favorite, start a journal about what you are grateful for. Put back into your life the little things that make you so happy but don’t cause you to break the bank. These are “things” you can treasure over and over whenever you wish, for the sole purpose of making you happy. This is definitely a successful woman’s secret to success.

Secret ingredient that could be harmful to your health

I had breakfast at a friends house the other day. It was great to be able to relax and have a nice home cooked meal (that was cooked by someone other than me). I got to sit back and relax while she was kind enough to do all the work.

We were talking about healthy choices and got on the topic of butter and margarine. There are many brands and types of butter, margarines, and butter substitutes. The choices can be a bit overwhelming actually.

There’s a secret when it comes to picking out a healthy buttery spread for your food.

Just because the advertising label says No Trans Fat, doesn’t mean it’s a healthy choice. On the same token, just because it’s not butter or it is a margarine or other type of spread doesn’t mean it’s healthy either.

Okay, here’s the secret. Turn the container to the back and read the list of ingredients. If you see the words “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” anywhere in the ingredients list, put it back on the shelf. This is worse for you than regular butter. At least the body knows how to break down butter. This process that the food industry is using to preserve food for longer shelf time is definitely more harmful than just a little bit of saturated fat alone.

Of course, you want to choose products that are low in saturated fat too, but beware of this sneaky little ingredient. It will do way more harm than good.

New Year

Happy New Year! Have you made your new year resolution yet? I have, but I wouldn’t call it a resolution. I am always working on myself to improve my life and make things easier and more pleasing. It’s been an ongoing process but I intend to have a home that is organized, clean, and efficient.

One thing that successful women know is that when you have a lot of stuff around it saps away your energy. You lose time looking for missing items and the overall appearance makes you feel tired and frustrated. But when you have everything organized and keep things in their place, you feel energized by your surroundings and feel joy and peace being at home.

I am not naturally an organized person. It is definitely a work in progress for me but the key thing that made things easier was getting rid of all the stuff. When you clear out space by getting rid of unused items and piles of paper, you open up that space for good things to come. I’m not sure why it works but I believe it has something to do with energy. Energy gets stifled by all the junk around so when you open up the space, the energy can flow more freely.

There’s another upside to getting rid of unused items too. It feels great to donate to those who need these things more than you do. If you have items in your home that are sitting around taking up space, why not let someone else have them so they can get enjoyment and benefit from them. The tax deduction is also a nice perk.

I feel so strongly that getting organized is such an important topic that I will be conducting a teleclass on the subject and of course am available to help you in your quest for a happy home. Check the website for upcoming teleclasses and workshops. It’s a lot easier to conquer the mess when you have someone to support you. www.systemsinbalance.com/events.html

Success for Women

Welcome to What Successful Women Know! I am so excited to have this blog because this is such a great and important topic… women and success. There are many successful women out there and others who are striving to be a success. Success means different things to everyone so in this case, it’s not about how much money you make or what kind of house you live in or car you drive. At the same time, for some women, these are very much a part of what determines success.

Overall I think that success is having the financial security or freedom to live your life and not be stressed every month about having to pay the bills. It’s about having time to spend with family and friends and truly be there in the moment. Your home is neat and organized and is decorated the way that makes you feel good to be at home. You eat nutritious food and have an active lifestyle that incorporates exercise and fitness on a regular basis. You enjoy the fact that you get plenty of rest and wake up feeling refreshed and energized every day. You love what you do whether it is being a corporate executive or a stay at home mom.

The list could go on and on but the main idea here is that success is what you think it is. You can create the life you desire and be truly happy. This is what I call success.

I invite you to please post your definitions of success and feel free to share your stories. This blog is about abundance so share your wisdom and thoughts. Let’s share in the wealth of successful women together.
